Before
I go any further, let me clear the definition of East Europe. I divide Europe
into 3 parts – West, Mid and East. France, Germany, Spain, UK, Netherlands make
my West Europe. Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Czech, Slovenia, Estonia, Austria
belong to my mid strip of Europe. Now, the focus of this write up, Greece,
Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro,
Kosovo make my East Europe. I Have done my 4th trip across this
routes and I will share the best places, how to get there, what to do and what
not to do there.

1 Santorini
An
island in Greece, Santorini is a must visit place. It is an island with the
best sun rise, best village, cliff side views and a very liberal beach. You go
to Athens and from there you can catch a cruise (North Star) to Santorini. The
cruise is very soothing, scenic and takes about 6 hours. Oia is best known for
its sun rise, Kamari is the best beach (honeymoon couples can freely express on
the beach!) and Fera cliff side view is best visited by most tourists,
including the Pyrgos village that boasts the most decorated Blue dome that you
often see in photos on Greek Tourism Food.
You
mostly get Italian food, Turkish food and a few Chinese or Indian places. Also
try Moussaka which is Greek delicacy but try it with low expectation. Cut this
if you are on low budget or limited time. I suggest you taste a pastry or
bakery in Kimbo that is found pretty much everywhere in Greece and houses the
best coffee in East Europe.
2 Sofia
The
capital of Bulgaria, Sofia is the coolest underrated place on earth. If not for
its cool streets, people, culture, mannerism – love it for its interesting
history. I get intrigued by the conflict of history – Russian and Muslim
Byzantine periods. The clash of history starts with the name. Locals say that
Sofia is named after the Queen Sofia but Google says that Sofia was a church
that was the center of the city from ages ago. You must go to the Russian
Lions, Alexander Nevaski Cathedral and Vitoshaavenue.

Do
not leave Sofia without trying Saarmi, KhushBurek (stuffed pepper/capsicum with
cheese and herbs).
3 Bucharest
The
actual capital town is not that enchanting but the outskirts are fabulous. The
Dimitri Gusti and lake is a must go. The lake is beautiful with lots of water
side restaurants. Along the lake side, Berira H is a restaurant that serves the
best foods in the country. The old parliament museum and the museums (locally
called muzel) are in abundance. The freedom square is for your selfie.
4 Budapest
1
USD = 340 HUF (Forint). Start with that. Spend wisely in places like Opera,
Danube river cruise, Buda castle, Grand Budapest Hotel, King’s parade and
Michael Jackson’s Parthenon. There are plenty other less known places for you
to visit – they have a Soho-like place next to the Central Station (Kelit).
Foods
are mainly typical East European cuisines but who would be in Hungary and not
try beef Goulash? The Russian and middle eastern dishes are not exotic in here
and better, they a touch of their own on these.

5 Zagreb
Jelacic
is the main tourist area (aslo called European Square). Hang around here 24/7,
there are people, tourists, aisles, clubs, foodies. 500 meter to North, you
have the famous Cathedral and Miamara. Walk in the morning in their Botanical
Park – it is a beauty. It is smaller than Hyde park or Central park but has
historic buildings as a backdrop. I found the cheapest brand shopping street in
Zagreb. Gucci and Zara are 5 minutes from Miamara. You can and should round up
Zagreb city by tram. Trams go everywhere (17, 11, 13, 14 and 6). This is a
small city, you can’t get lost.
Croatian
food is nothing too shiny but average East European food, Irish pubs with bean
bags. Croatia has football everywhere after their World cup final in 2018. There
are McDonalds almost everywhere 24/7 for your late night hunger.
